It has been since revisited a few times in celebration of its legacy, and will now receive a 50th anniversary release on Aug. The resulting documentary/concert film, Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars: The Motion Picture, was released in 1979, after hang-ups in the post-production process, and only really received a limited release all the way up to 1983. Pennebaker captured the final performance of the Ziggy Stardust persona of David Bowie, a sudden announcement the singer/cultural icon made onstage at a July 7 show at London’s Hammersmith Odeon.
